Water Damage iPhone Repair | RepairZoom

Tips for Water Damaged iPhones, iPads, and iPods

Ker plunk! Oh no! Did your iPhone take a swim with you in a pool? Did you wash it with your clothes?  Water may be fun and healthy for us humans, but iPhones do not like water!

First things first -- DO NOT turn on a wet iPhone!  This is so hard to resist, we know, but your iPhone logic board may immediately self destruct if you try to turn it on while wet, rendering your iPhone non-repairable.

RepairZoom suggested emergency procedures for water-damaged iPhones, iPads, and iPods (at your own risk).

WHAT TO EXPECT:  UNFORTUNATELY, WATER DAMAGED iPHONES ARE FREQUENTLY UNREPAIRABLE - BUT THESE TIPS MAY HELP YOU WITH SOME LUCKY SALVATION!

GOOD LUCK WITH THESE TIPS.  WE OFFER NO GUARANTEES FOR OUR IPHONE WATER DAMAGE TIPS - SO PLEASE USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

  1. Initially, do not attempt to turn on a water damaged iPhone.  That means, do not touch any buttons.
  2. Really, do not turn on your water damaged iPhone -- really don’t try it.
  3. Please Please Please -- Do not turn on your iPhone.  This is so hard to resist, we know, but your iPhone's logic board may fry immediately if you attempt to turn it on while wet inside.
  4. If possible, remove the SIM card from the iPhone.
  5. Keep the phone in a vertical and upright position.  Avoid turning the phone upside down or laying it flat.  You do not want to spread the water around inside the phone.
  6. If possible, find a warm sunny window and place the phone in the sun (keep the phone upright, do not lay it flat at any time.)
  7. Let the phone warm up in the sunny window.  Leave it there 1 or 2 days.  Let it warm up and dry out.
  8. You want 100% of the moisture inside the phone to dry out before you attempt to turn it on again.
  9. AFTER you have followed all of the steps above -- Try turning on the iPhone.  With luck, it will turn on.
  10. If your iPhone turns on... but you see water damage marks on the LCD, you simply need to replace the LCD by ordering one of our iPhone LCD repairs.
  11. If the phone does NOT turn on, you MAY be out of luck.  But you can still try a new battery, a new charging port, or a new LCD screen.  We offer all these services at RepairZoom and sometimes it will repair your water damaged iPhone.

GOOD LUCK WITH THESE TIPS.  WE OFFER NO GUARANTEES REGARDING OUR IPHONE WATER DAMAGE TIPS - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

More suggestions and options for iPhone and iPod water damage:

  • If your purchased Accidental Damage protection from your wireless carrier - USE IT!  It is always best to just replace water damaged electronics.
  • If your iPhone is still in a 1 year or 2 year warranty, go to the Apple Store or call AppleCare.  Regular AppleCare is not accidental damage protection, but you may still be able to get it replaced.  Apple has changed their policies regarding water damage (as of early 2011).
  • If you have AppleCare+, go to Apple and redeem your warranty for water damage.
  • "Partial recovery" is a common outcome after water damage.  This means the phone may work, but not at 100% of it's original specification.
  • No OVEN heat!  RepairZoom also does NOT recommend using hair-dryers (it can spread the moisture) - no cooking ovens or microwaves (people actually try this).
  • If you bought your iPhone from Best Buy or a similar retailers, or you used a credit card that offers protection, you may be able to get some of your money back or get the iPhone replaced for free. Don't forget to check these options!
  • Selling your iPhone after water damage is another option.  There are plenty of companies who will purchase your device, even if it is not working.
